Chateauneuf-en-Auxois
The 12th- to 15th-century château that gives its name to the village dominates the surrounding countryside from a defensive hilltop stronghold, and the vineyard views from its massive walls and pepper-pot towers are magnificent. The tiny medieval streets and squares that shelter behind it are exquisite, and exploring them is like stepping back in time. Look out for coats of arms on façades – many were damaged or destroyed during the Revolution but some remain.
