The short story of Trouville
In 1825, a young landscape painter Charles MOZIN discovered Trouville, a little fishing port in Normandy. In Paris, he kept Trouville in mind by exhibiting his Trouville paintings to other artists who later followed him to the paradise of Trouville. The artists and writers included ISABEY, MONET, COROT, BOUDIN, PROUST, DUMAS and FLAUBERT.
During the Second Empire, from 1852 to 1870, Trouville became ‘Queen of the Beaches’ and a very famous seaside resort. It was during this glorious period that villas, splendid hotels and casinos were built along the beach. Guided visits are organised during the season to discover the 19th century heritage of this town.
The Museum of Trouville - Villa Montebello
The museum created in 1972 is located in an elegant villa facing the sea and exhibits history of Trouville local spa therapy, as well as the work of artists who stayed in the resort. The collections include 19th and 20th century drawings and prints, and original paintings and posters donated by French artists such as André HAMBOURG and Raymond SAVIGNAC. The villa was built originally for the marchioness of MONTEBELLO. It is an elegant neo-Louis 13th century structure in brick and stone. The Montebello villa is listed on the Annex List of Historical Monuments of France.
The Markets
The picturesque features and ambience of Trouville rely on the activity of its markets.
The fish market on the quayside is open every day, all year round.
A large market takes place twice a week, all year round on Wednesdays and Sunday mornings (fruit, vegetables, local products and miscellaneous items…).
Sports activities
A wide range of sports activities is located right on the beach and therefore within easy reach from the centre of Trouville, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a nautical centre, kayak, tennis, minigolf and pony tours for children…
Golf is one of the good reasons to come and stay in Trouville: 4 golf-courses within 15 kilometres and 12 golf-courses in Calvados.

The Casino Barrière of Trouville, conveniently situated between the port and the beach, near the hotels and the shops, wholly refurbished by the famous decorator, Jacques GARCIA, offers a wide range of activities.
